Why I switched to beehiiv

Yesterday, I sent out a cheeky “captain’s log” style email to announce my migration from MailerLite over to beehiiv, where I am writing you from presently.

The email was based on the “log” style of writing from the book The Martian, by Andy Weir. The movie is great, and the book is even better. Read it.

(If you didn’t realize I was a huge science fiction fan before, well, now you realize.)

And yes. The email itself was a little weird, but most people seemed to like it. Or at least, most people opened it. I think many read it, too.

On the ESP switch … here’s why I did it:

A couple years back, one of the major growth initiatives for this newsletter was running “classified” ads in other newsletters in the marketing world.

This was my most successful channel by far, but unfortunately, the company that facilitated the connections between my newsletter and other newsletters was shut down.

Well, actually, they were acquired … by beehiiv. 😅

And now that I’ve finally gotten back around to writing this newsletter on a daily basis, I wanted to reactivate that channel. And I wanted it badly enough that I was willing to make the switch.

I haven’t implemented any of their growth tools yet, but already, beehiiv feels like a major upgrade from MailerLite.

Deliverability seems solid. Analytics are simple and clear. And the email builder is fantastic — it even has a word counter!

(No shade to MailerLite, by the way. When I was Director of Marketing at a small SaaS startup years ago, we used it to manage a list of around 30,000 creative freelancers. They have amazing deliverability in my experience.)

But now, it’s time for growth.

On that subject … do you own — or manage — a newsletter in the marketing, freelance writing, copywriting, or advertising space?

If so, please reply to this email. I’d like to chat.
